U.S. embassy security warning for Americans living in Brazil during election period

The United States Embassy in Brazil issued a security alert Friday (Aug. 12) for U.S. citizens living in Brazilian territory, urging caution during this year’s election period.

The document reiterates that demonstrations can be expected throughout the country in October, and recommends avoiding places with potential conflicts.

The text advises U.S. citizens to be cautious in crowds, to use discretion, and to obtain information about the security situation in the country through official channels and the Brazilian press.

“The U.S. Embassy and consulates in Brazil warn U.S. citizens to avoid the area around protests and demonstrations, as even peaceful demonstrations can lead to confrontations,” the document states.

U.S. consulates and the U.S. Embassy said they expect the Brazilian election period to be “relatively calm.”

However, they warn U.S. citizens who are in Brazil to be aware of their surroundings and any roadblocks.”
