Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has been confirmed as a candidate for re-election. This was announced by the Liberal Party Congress, held Sunday at Maracanazinho Stadium in Rio de Janeiro.

The president accepted his candidacy in an event nearly 10,000 Liberal Party supporters attended. At the same event, Army General of the Reserve Walter Souza Braga Netto was also endorsed as a candidate for vice president.

At the congress, Bolsonaro was accompanied by his wife Michelle, several ministers of his government, former President Fernando Collor de Mello and former soccer player and current Senator Romário.

Jair Bolsonaro’s main challenge in the Oct. 2 presidential election will be against Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva of the Workers’ Party, who, according to the latest polls, has 44% of the vote, while Bolsonaro has 36%.
