Three children dead after mudslide sweeps through elementary school in Medellin

A mudslide smashed into a rural elementary school in the mountains south of Medellin on Thursday, killing three children.

Along a road, numerous rescue workers gathered around the hit school.

“These three young people were not rescued in time and alive, as only one was rescued who was in the same condition just in time, and one young man who was buried up to his waist and was pulled out practically at the same moment because he was basically stuck in the mud but not completely buried,” Oscar Fernando Mesa, a school teacher, said.

According to Antioquia provincial officials, about 20 children were during break time in the cafeteria of La Lechia when the slide hit.

Most of them escaped unharmed, but three children under the age of six were killed, while two teenagers who had to be dug out of the building were hospitalized.
