Brazil received over 1 million foreign visitors by May

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Brazil exceeded the mark of 1 million foreign visitors from January to May of this year, according to a survey conducted by the Brazilian International Tourism Promotion Agency (Embratur).

The data are from the International Traffic System (STI) of the Federal Police. The number of travelers is the highest since 2020, when the covid-19 pandemic began. That year, 1.8 million people entered the country with tourist visas.

There were 962,000 landings through April, which was already a 60% increase over 2021. Last year, 596,700 foreigners were in Brazil. For Embratur, the entry of 1,092,579 people “proves the sector’s recovery after two years of restrictions.”

Two advertising pieces were aired in the United States. One of them was the "Brazil is visa-free, come visit!" campaign, running from November 2021 to January 2022.

The survey indicates that there was also growth in Brazil’s international air network in May, a volume representing 74.36% of the capacity in 2019, according to data from the National Civil Aviation Agency (Anac). There were 3,547 monthly flights, an increase of 312.89% compared to the same month in 2021.

The numbers from Anac and the airlines show that 84 international flights were created or resumed from January to May, in addition to 36 additional frequencies that came into operation. The industry estimates that by February 2023, there will be an increase of 122 flights from 17 different countries, plus 48 additional frequencies.
