Brazil: São Paulo City Hall cancels Carnaval due to lack of sponsors

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – São Paulo City confirmed on Thursday, July 7, that the city’s street Carnaval, named Esquenta Carnaval 2022 (“Carnaval Heat Up 2022”), was canceled.

The reason is the absence of sponsors for the event. Mayor Ricardo Nunes (MDB) had already informed that the off-season Carnaval would not be financed by the city government — private companies were required to participate.

Two public tenders were held in search of financing for the event, but there was no interest. The minimum bids were R$10 million (US$1.9 million) and R$6 million, respectively.

Esquenta Carnaval would have a parade of Carnaval blocks throughout the city on the weekend of July 16 and 17.
