Brazil: Over 35,700 children and adolescents were raped in 2021, says survey

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Globo’s Fantástico anticipated an unprecedented survey by the Brazilian Forum for Public Safety carried out at the Liberta Institute’s request, showing that at least 35,735 children and adolescents from zero to 13 years old were raped in Brazil last year.

According to the research, this number represents more than half of the rape cases registered in Brazil in 2021.

In the vast majority of cases, the victims had some relationship with the perpetrator:

  • 40% of the crimes were committed by parents or step-parents;
  • 37% by cousins, brothers, or uncles;
  • and almost 9% by grandparents.

85.5% of the child and adolescent victims of rape were girls; 14.5% were boys.

“If we remember the fact that more than four girls under the age of 13 are raped every hour, and Brazil has more than 21,600 girls who become pregnant before the age of 14 every year, we will be sure that this was not the only case that happened and we need to talk about it,” says Luciana Temer, president of the Instituto Liberta.
