Coffee harvest advances to 28% of area in Brazil, says Safras & Mercado

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Brazil’s coffee harvest for the 2022/23 campaign reached 28% of the area as of June 14, an advance of 4 percentage points in the weekly comparison, although it still lags behind other years, consulting firm Safras & Mercado said on Wednesday, June 15.

In the same period of the previous cycle, work stood at 34%, while the historical average for this time of year is 36%, the data showed.

Considering the estimate of 61.1 million 60-kilogram bags for domestic production in 2022/23, the consultant believes that 17.36 million bags have been harvested.

The arabica harvest has advanced to 21% of the crop, in line with the same period last year but below the average of 28% for the period.

“The producer continues to complain about the lack of labor, especially in Matas de Minas and Espírito Santo region. It limits faster progress of the works,” Safras consultant Gil Barabach said in a note.

“The predominantly dry weather continues to favor coffee harvesting and drying work. However, the producer has not rushed processing, especially of arabica, which explains the low supply available,” he added.

The arabica harvest has advanced to 21% of the crop, in line with the same period last year but below the average of 28% for the period.

Conilon work reached 42% of the area, compared to 55% last year and 56% of the average of recent years.
