Brazil’s services sector rises 0.2% in April -IBGE

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The services sector rose 0.2% in April from March. The results were released by the IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics) on Tuesday (14).

According to the institute, the volume of services in the country increased for the second consecutive month. The sector’s activity level is 7.2% above the February 2020 level before the Covid 19 pandemic. However, it is 4.2% below November 2014, the highest level in the historical series.

Compared to April 2021, the sector recorded growth of 9.4%, the 14th consecutive month of growth. The services sector recorded a 9.5% increase from January to April 2022 compared to last year’s period.

In 12 months, the volume of services declined from a growth of 13.6% in March to a peak of 12.8% in April. The sector has been upward since February 2021 in the 1-year accumulation, which was interrupted in April this year.

According to IBGE data, only 2 of the 5 economic sectors posted an increase in April compared to March. Here is the summary:

Information and communication (+0.7%);
Family services (+1.9%);
Transportation (-1.7%);
Professional, administrative and complementary occupations (-0.6%);
other services (-1.6%).
