Chile’s unemployment rate falls to 7.7% in February-April quarter

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – In the February-April quarter, unemployment in Chile dropped to 7.7%, a decrease of 2.5 percentage points (pp) compared to the same period last year, INE reported on May 30.

The decrease in unemployment, according to the National Statistics Institute (INE), was mainly driven by the increase of workers in sectors such as commerce (11.2%), accommodation and food service (31.5%), and health activities (16.1%).

“The unemployment rate in women stood at 8.5%, decreasing 2.4 pp in twelve months,” indicated by INE. “In men, the unemployment rate was 7.2%, with a decrease of 2.6 pp,” they added.

In the Metropolitan Region, where 7.1 of Chile’s 19 million inhabitants live, the unemployment rate for the quarter under analysis reached 8.5%, decreasing 3.5 pp in twelve months.

Chile closed 2021 with a GDP growth of 11.7%, but for this year, a strong deceleration of the local economy has been anticipated, increasing 1.5%.
