Brazil: 42% blame Bolsonaro for inflation -poll

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The latest PoderData poll, conducted May 22-24, 2022, shows that 42% of the population blames President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) for the recent price increases in Brazil.

Another 18% believe state governors are to blame. The coronavirus pandemic is cited by 16%, and the war between Russia and Ukraine by 9%.

Inflation in Brazil has been 12.1% in the last 12 months, the highest level since October 2003.

Bolsonaro’s supporters, who approve of his government, are more likely to blame the governors for the economic scenario. In this group, 38% make this statement. Among those who disagree with the federal administration, 68% blame the president.

The results reflect the battle Bolsonaro is having with state leaders. The president has already blamed them for unemployment, gasoline and diesel prices, and the fixing of the ICMS.

Looking at the stratification of the survey, the poorest (46%) and the residents of the Northeast (47%) are the ones who hold Bolsonaro most responsible for the price increase. In the North, the percentage of those who blame the governors for inflation is the highest (33%).

PoderData’s results also show that 76% of the Brazilian population say their lives have been affected by recent price increases.

Those who do not perceive the increase are only 1%, while 20% say that this factor does not harm them. There are still 3% who did not know how to answer the survey.

Following the trend of the first question, it is the poorest (80%) and those living in the Northeast (81%) who report the most losses due to inflation.

Among the wealthiest, 3% say they have not noticed price increases, while 66% feel inconvenienced.

Looking at the stratification of the question, 60% in the South believe that shopping at the market has become more expensive. In the Northeast, 36% cite fuel and transportation – the same percentage as the wealthiest who earn more than five minimum wages.
