Uruguay: Entrepreneurs debate their role in Latin America’s reality

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – On April 28, business people discussed the role they should assume in the region’s current situation during the event “The responsibility of the businessman in the current reality of Latin America“, organized in Uruguay by the International Christian Union of Executives (Uniapac).

Sources of this group explained that more than 100 Uruguayan and foreign businessmen are participating in the congress “to listen and reflect together” on their responsibility, centered on three axes: institutional, decent work, and human economy and sustainability.

The first of the two-day meeting was attended by the President of Uruguay, Luis Lacalle Pou, and the Minister of Labor and Social Security, Pablo Mieres.

Uniapac's main objectives are "oriented towards the creation of a more just and humane society, through the promotion of the transformation of enterprises".

A letter sent by Pope Francis was read, and some of the prominent figures of the event were interviewed, according to the Presidency.

These were: Bruno Bobone, president of Uniapac International; Gigi Cavalieri, president of Uniapac Latin America; and Rosario González Stewart, president of the Christian Association of Business Leaders in Uruguay.

There was also a series of lectures by Mieres, who addressed “the issue of institutional strength as the key to the development of countries”.

He also spoke about “the threat posed by clientelism to the relationship between the businessman and the ruler”, which he considered a deviation “that does not allow consolidating the strengthening of institutionality and respect for the rules of a democratic society”.

Founded in 1931 by the Dutch, Belgian, and French Catholic employers’ federations and with the participation of observers from Italy, Germany, and the Czech Republic, Uniapac’s main objectives are “oriented towards the creation of a more just and humane society, through the promotion of the transformation of enterprises”.

This time, its congress is being held at the Sofitel Montevideo Casino Carrasco & Spa hotel.

Formerly called Hotel Casino Carrasco, this building is historical, among other things, for having hosted figures such as physicist Albert Einstein and Spanish writer Federico García Lorca.
