Bolsonaro appoints former army chief to head Brazil’s intelligence agency

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) appointed former Army Captain Victor Felismino Carneiro as deputy director of Brazil’s intelligence agency (Abin) on Wednesday, April 13.

Carneiro takes over the post on an interim basis, succeeding Alexandre Ramagem, the agency’s former director. Ramagem left the agency two weeks ago to run as a deputy in the 2022 elections for the PL, Bolsonaro’s party.

After Ramagem’s departure, the government even appointed the agency’s number two, Carlos Afonso Coelho, as the new head of the office. However, Carneiro’s name has already been mentioned for the agency’s leadership, and his appointment was published in this Wednesday’s Diário Oficial da União (DOU).
