Argentina seeks Brazil’s cooperation with fertilizers self-sufficiency

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Accompanied by Argentine Ambassador Daniel Scioli, Argentina’s Minister of Agriculture, Livestock, and Fisheries, Julián Domínguez, held a meeting in Brasilia with his counterpart from the Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture, Marcos Montes, where the impact of the increase in the international price of fertilizers on the continent’s productivity and global food security was analyzed.

In this regard, Julián Domínguez stated that “Argentina and Brazil are strategic partners and world leaders in Agri-bio-industrial production. We must work together towards self-sufficiency in fertilizers to guarantee our producers”.

On the other hand, the head of the agricultural portfolio said: “We are moving forward in a new stage of bilateral relations in creating a binational sanitary control body to speed up trade at the borders”.

He also pointed out that “the world demands the food we produce, with very demanding consumers in terms of quality. For this reason, we have raised the need to cooperate on a regional basis to certify good agricultural and livestock practices”.

In addition, the head of the national agricultural portfolio raised the need to “promote all biotechnological development to face the challenges posed by climate change on our regional production systems”.

The meeting with Marcos Montes kicked off Julián Domínguez’s intense agenda in Brazil with Ambassador Scioli. There, the minister will lead a commercial tour together with the Undersecretary of Fisheries and Aquaculture, Carlos Liberman, and more than 20 executives and presidents of business chambers of the fishing sector and investors of the Argentine aquaculture sector and Brazilian companies to consolidate new commercial opportunities, generating added value at origin and employment generation for Argentina.

The commercial tour promoted by Argentina takes place within the International Year of Artisanal Fisheries and Aquaculture framework, which the UN General Assembly declared to encourage the development of the sector at an international level.
