Brazil: Student arrested suspected of setting classmate on fire

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – A 19-year-old student was arrested on March 31, suspected of setting fire to the body of a classmate inside a school in the Goiás state capital, Goiânia. According to the State Police, the suspect said she committed the crime after suffering bullying because of her tan.

The Fire Department informed that the victim had first and second-degree burns on about 70% of her body.

The team of firemen then took her to the Emergency Hospital Governador Otávio Lage de Siqueira (Hugol), where she is still hospitalized in serious condition.

The aggressor told the police that the day before the crime, the victim had made derogatory comments about her tan and, because of that, she brought alcohol, knives, and a lighter to school.

According to reports gathered by the police on the scene, the victim was in the lunch line at the moment the assailant approached her from behind.

Then, according to reports, the aggressor threw alcohol on her classmate and set her on fire. School employees rescued the student and called the Fire Department.

The team of firemen then took her to the Emergency Hospital Governador Otávio Lage de Siqueira (Hugol), where she is still hospitalized in serious condition.
