Brazil: Ports of Paraná state record a new double record in throughput

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – February closed with two new records in port throughput in Paraná. Both in the first two months and monthly volume, the percentage increases exceeded expectations with 27% and 39%, respectively, compared to 2021.

“With more than 5 million tons handled in February and more than 9 million tons in the two months, we achieved the best handling of both periods in the ports of Paranaguá and Antonina,” said the general manager of Portos do Paraná, Luiz Fernando Garcia.

In February, 5,076,757 tons of cargo were imported and exported through the terminals in the ports of Paraná. In the two-month period, which also goes down in the history of records, the movement reached 9,234,295 tons.

“Unlike the last months of last year, the segment that handled the most goods was Solid Bulk, both in imports and exports,” Garcia commented.

This segment accounted for almost 64% of the movements in the first two months of this year, with 5,893,104 tons. In February, solid bulk products accounted for 68.34% of the volumes handled in both directions of international trade, with 3,469,252 tons.

Globally, considering the three main segments (General Cargo, Liquid Bulk, and Solid Bulk), 5,040,887 tons of cargo were exported through the ports of Paraná in the first two months of 2022. The volume is 46% higher than the 3,459,699 tons in the same period last year.

In terms of monthly movements, the exported volume was 2,832,256 tons, 66% higher than the February 2021 volume of 1,702,124 tons.

There were also increases in imported volumes. In the two months, 4,193,408 tons arrived at the ports of Paranaguá and Antonina, up 46% from 3,787,513 tons in 2021.

Imports totaled 2,244,501 tons this month, up 15.3% from 1,946,414 tons in February last year.

Exports also exceeded imports in terms of containerized cargo handled. This year 96,544 TEUs were exported, 7% more than the 90,243 units handled last year. Imports were 76,449 TEUs, 6% more than the 72,415 recorded in the first two months of 2021.

In both directions, 84,920 TEUs were handled in February alone, 8.6% more than the 78,150 TEUs recorded in the same month of 2021.

Throughput at the terminal operating in Porto de Antonina increased by 157%. In the quarter of this year, 313,018 tons of cargo were handled, compared to 121,995 tons last year.

Monthly throughput increased from 64,310 tons in February 2021 to 149,375 tons in the last month of 2022, an increase of 132.2%.
