Federal Deputy defends Brazil’s potential to exploit potash deposits domestically

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – In the face of apprehension over the lack of fertilizers with the war in Ukraine, federal deputy Evair de Melo from Espírito Santo defended the bill 191/2020, which allows the exploration of natural resources on indigenous lands.

“We believe that the bill gives us the potential to explore our deposits, considering that our country needs a considerable volume of fertilizers because we are dependent on this international agenda,” he said.

The deputy also says that the lack of fertilizers can harm the country’s food supply.

“We have created a problem by not having a structured policy. Brazil cannot sit on its deposits, especially of potash. So the country has to choose if it wants to starve, or if it wants to be self-sufficient in the production of fertilizer”.

Evair de Melo also criticized those against the bill 191/2020, reinforcing that they are not justified.

“We buy deposits from Eastern Europe, Canada, and Asia, so why can’t we explore our own deposits? What I see from those who oppose it is a bit of ill will,” he points out.
