Uruguay’s leftists hyperventilate as international investors win bid for Montevideo port

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The leftist alliance Frente Amplio this Wednesday expanded its accusation against the center-right government led by Luis Lacalle Pou for handing over the port of Montevideo to the multinational Katoen Natie, granting it the monopoly of the container terminal for 50 years.

The Frente Amplio bench accuses the government of “serious crimes against public property and handing over the Port of Montevideo to the Belgian multinational group Katoen Natie (KNG) by 2081.”

The extension was submitted to a Prosecutor’s Office by pro-amplista senators Charles Carrera and Mario Bergara.

In their statements, Carrera and Bergara agreed that this concession represents “the greatest surrender of sovereignty in our recent history.”

“If the government relies only on the company’s arguments, on which side of the table are the interests of all Uruguayan men and women? Why was no technical-economic report requested in the negotiation process?” they asked.

For his part, Bergara stressed that the reason why no reports were requested by any government agency is that they would be negative; it is an unconstitutional step that harms the interests of all Uruguayans.

The Prosecutor’s Office has been presented with documents that show that the Executive Branch has not responded to any of the complaints filed, resulting in a fictitious denial, which gives rise to the simple presumption of the illegality of the government’s actions.
