Brazil’s Central Bank website offline due to overload in system “hunting” for forgotten funds

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The Central Bank of Brazil’s official website went offline last Monday night, January 24. The issue may have been prompted after the service allowing users to check if they have money left in banks was launched.

The tool registered a large demand, as soon as it was made public by the monetary institution; to access the required information on the amounts receivable, users must navigate through different web pages of the Central Bank.

An access overload may have caused the problem in the Central Bank’s systems.

At around 9:30 PM, the Central Bank’s website would not load and the page displayed a warning that it could not be accessed. Other media outlets reported the issue earlier in the day, at 9 PM.

The Central Bank on Monday reported that there are approximately R$8 (US$1.5) billion held by financial institutions that need to be returned to individuals or companies. The “Valores a Receber” (Receivable Amounts) functionality was launched on Monday and is contained in “Registrato” (the Central Bank system).
