Uruguay took advantage of meat embargo in Argentina: exports rose by more than 50% in 2021

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Meat exports in Uruguay had their dream year, taking advantage of the vacancy left by Argentina due to the clamp imposed by the government since May 20.

According to figures from the National Meat Institute, up to December, it had exported 404,000 tons of product weight, 53% more than in the same period of 2020. At the same time, they generated US$2.3 billion, 50.5% more than that period.

China represented the primary market for Uruguay, as is the case in Argentina, where shipments to that destination increased by 54%, reaching 300,000 tons for almost US$1.2 billion.

While in Argentina, with the restrictions to export, the accumulated January-November was 524,241 tons versus 567,282 tons recorded in the same period of 2020, which marks a drop of 7%. Meanwhile, US$2.529 billion were generated this year, 0.7% more than in the same period of 2020.

And measures to control exports and supply the domestic market will continue in 2022. On Monday, the government announced the new scheme for shipments of one of Argentina’s flagship products.

Decree 911/2021 stipulates that the seven most consumed cuts in the country will continue to be prohibited for foreign markets until December 31, 2023.

Only exports of type D or E cows (mainly go to the Chinese market, which represents 75% of the total), bull, and bones with meat resulting from deboning were released.
