Brazil’s agribusiness to experience output rebound in 2022 – Expert

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The executive director of Agricultural Policy at CONAB (National Supply Company), Sérgio Zen, on Sunday, January 2, said that the trend in agribusiness for the year 2022 is for a rebound in the output that was hampered last year.

“We are coming from a crop damaged the previous year by droughts, frosts and pests. These events created the perfect storm, but the trend now is for a rebound in production,” he said.

Zen stated that weather challenges will persist because of La Niña. The phenomenon poses challenges due to its unpredictability and the ideal is to “continue monitoring the evolution of climate events on a weekly basis and adjust expectations as necessary,” he said.

Zen also talked about the protein market and said that Brazil has a key role in this segment, because “we are in a very promising moment, where there is an increase in the income of global economies and we are the leading supplier of these foods.”

“We will always be in this international space, mainly due to the productivity gains achieved in recent years,” he said.

Finally, Zen reinforced the need for policies that enable sustainability and investment. According to him, Brazil has the necessary support and “this has been achieved together with the use of technology,” enabling higher output with fewer inputs.

“Brazilian agriculture relies on technology, schedule, and technique based on continued investment,” he added.
