IBGE: 29.906 million Brazilians were jobless in the quarter through October

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – In the quarter ending in October 2021, 29.906 million Brazilians were out of work, according to data from the Continuous National Household Sample Survey, begun in 2012 by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE).

The indicator includes the unemployment rate, the underemployment rate due to insufficient hours and the rate of the potential labor force, people who are not looking for a job but would be available for work. In the quarter through October 2020, the labor force underutilization rate stood at 29.6%.

The underutilized population fell 6.5% from the quarter through July, 2.091 million fewer people. In relation to the quarter through October 2020, there was a drop of 9.6%, 3.189 million fewer people.

UUNDEREMPLOYMENT DUE TO INSUFFICIENT HOURS

According to the IBGE, the underemployment rate due to insufficient hours worked stood at 8.2% in the quarter through October, down from 8.6% in the quarter through July.

In all of Brazil, there are 7.669 million underemployed workers due to insufficient hours worked. The indicator includes people employed for less than 40 hours a week who would like to work for a longer period of time.

From the quarter ended in July to the quarter ended in October, there was a drop of 154,000 people in the population in this condition. In a year, Brazil has an additional 1.152 million people underemployed due to insufficient hours worked.
