Brazil: Gasoline and power price hikes account for over 1/3 of IPCA-15 in 2021

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The rise in the price of only two items in the household basket in 2021 was responsible for over 1/3 of the forecast for official inflation, which reached double digits this year.

The result is the highest for the end of the year since 2015, reported the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE).

Gasoline soared 49.59% in 2021, the item with the greatest impact on the IPCA-15, 2.42 percentage points. Electricity rose 27.34%, the second highest impact, 1.20 percentage points.

New vehicles climbed 15.20%, an impact of 0.45 percentage points, followed by ethanol, rising 63.28% and impacting 0.42 percentage points, and cooking gas, up 38.07% with an impact of 0.41 percentage points.

Household spending on transport rose 21.35% in 2021, a contribution of 4.26 percentage points to the IPCA-15. Spending on Housing rose 14.67%, equivalent to 2.29 percentage points of the IPCA-15, while Food and Beverages increased 8.68%, contributing 1.82 percentage points to inflation.

In 2021, Household items rose 12.18% (0.46 percentage points); Clothing climbed 9.83% (0.42 percentage points); Health and Personal Care rose 3.46% (0.46 percentage points); Personal Expenses rose 4.61% (0.49 percentage points); Education increased 2.62% (0.16 percentage points); and Communications rose 1.04% (0.06 percentage points).
