IBGE: Number of cities in Brazil affected by fires up 43% between 2017 and 2020

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Among other indicators, the survey presents the impact of environmental devastation in the country.

In the main data on this topic, IBGE points out that “about 66.2% of municipalities reported the occurrence of some environmental impact in the past 24 months.”

The data also show that the highest percentages of municipalities that suffered the occurrence of these impacts are found in the North (78.5%) and Midwest (69.2%).

The “2020 Municipal (Munic) and State (Estadic) Basic Information Surveys” are conducted annually. In the case of the State Survey, all 27 states responded, while among the municipalities, 1.6% failed to submit their answers.

MANAGEMENT PRIORITIES

According to IBGE, in the questionnaire, state administrators selected 3 topics among 14 that they considered priorities in the 2020 management.

By order, “management of water resources” and “management of forest resources” come up with the most mentions, followed by “environmental monitoring” and “management of solid and hazardous waste,” with the same number of mentions.
