COP26: Panama presents the benefits of its green tourism to the world

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – At the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26) in Glasgow, Scotland, the Minister of Environment, Milciades Concepción, and the Administrator of Tourism of Panama, Iván Eskildsen, are promoting the sustainable tourism projects being carried out in the country for the benefit of the environment and the communities.

During the event: “Panama’s Tourism Model, non-carbon benefits and climate adaptation”, in the Panama pavilion at the climate summit, Concepción explained that the country has essential components in its ecosystems, which through ecotourism are an investment to prolong the health of natural resources in its territory.

The panel presented the project Institutionalizing Non-Carbon Benefits (BNRC) in climate change mitigation and adaptation strategies. This initiative is being implemented in indigenous communities of the Chagres National Park, four (4) communities in El Valle del Río Mamoní of the Chepo district and seven (7) communities of the Emberá comarca linked to the Chagres National Park and the Emberá Ẽjuä So Territory, he said.

“BNRCs are the positive socioeconomic, environmental or biocultural effects of activities developed in forests and that are well-governed. These actions contribute with mitigation and adaptation to climate change,” MiAmbiente explained in a statement.

In this case, he reported that the communities would obtain economic income by promoting ecotourism, conserving their watersheds, rivers, or other activities that improve their quality of life and the environment. They could even generate projects linked to the protection of natural resources.
