Economy Minister: Criticism of Brazil’s environmental management conceals protectionist political and commercial interests

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – “It is impossible for the country with the largest stock of preserved natural resources to be treated as the villain of international pollution,” the Minister said. “How can the country that pollutes the least be the country most attacked internationally?” Guedes added, during the launch of the National Green Growth Program at the Planalto Palace.

The Minister stated that Brazil speaks “on equal terms” with any country in the world and that it has a strong economy, respected abroad. “There is no way but to treat Brazil as a great country,” he stressed.

He said that other countries are asking for Brazil’s support in international negotiations, citing the global agreement to raise taxes on multinationals. And he added that the country wants to have its importance recognized.

“I think we should also assume this leading role in the green economy,” he argued. He also mentioned that the U.S. Treasury Secretary and other authorities supported Brazil’s accession to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).
