Brazil Rio to eliminate capacity limits in movie theaters, party venues and shopping malls

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – This is yet another step by the city that has been gradually relaxing the restrictive measures adopted to fight the Covid-19 pandemic. Mask use will remain compulsory in all these venues.

The announcement was made during the reopening event of CineCarioca Nova Brasília. The 91-seat movie theater, located in Complexo do Alemão, is the first to be installed in a favela community in Rio de Janeiro. The space opened in 2010 had been closed since December 2019, even before the pandemic broke out in Brazil.

“We renovated it, brought it into operation, and the population may now have access to a quality cultural facility,” Paes said. Four to 5 sessions will be screened daily, with tickets starting at R$5 (US$0.92). The program will include films for different age groups.

The Mayor attended the ceremony with Secretary of Government and Public Integrity Marcelo Calero and RioFilme CEO Eduardo Figueira.

According to the City Hall, CineCarioca Nova Brasília is the only movie theater option in the area comprising the 15 favelas of Complexo do Alemão. These communities have a population of approximately 60,000.
