Brazil could post record corn production in 2021/2022 – Conab

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Brazil’s corn crop could reach a record high in 2021/2022. According to data from the National Supply Company (Conab) relayed by the valuation firm S&P Global Platts, the country should post production of 116.3 million tons of the grain, or 29 million tons more than the previous season.

According to the industry, this exceptional volume is mainly due to the significant gains in productivity and, to a lesser extent, to the increase in cultivated areas.

Thus, while the yield per hectare should jump by 27.7% to 5.57 tons per hectare, the area devoted will increase by 4.7% to 20.8 million hectares. For the country, this favorable outlook marks a return to the pre-2020/2021 season dynamics, when drought severely affected the production system. With the dry weather and the scarcity of rain, the harvest of the said season had fallen below the 100 million tons mark.

More generally, the excellent production in Brazil should help boost the supply of the cereal on the world market from next February and limit the rise in its price.

As a reminder, Brazil is the world’s third-largest producer of corn behind the USA and China. It also ranks third in terms of exports behind the USA and Argentina.
