Brazil’s Rio de Janeiro Niemeyer Avenue reopened afer June collapse

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The seaside Niemeyer Avenue, which connects the neighborhoods of Leblon and São Conrado in Rio’s South Zone, was fully reopened on Monday, September 27. It took over 3 months of works, during which the road was operational solely on a “stop and go” basis.

In June, Geo-Rio’s team was forced to intervene on the site to repair a pipe affecting the drainage system.

The damage resulted in a fissure in the roadway and part of the asphalt gave way. The affected stretch was replaced and the road was cleared by 4 PM.

Before these repairs, the Infrastructure Secretariat had performed emergency containment work on the avenue between January and June.

After a hillside cleanup that removed 36 tons of garbage, the technicians observed the risk of rock fragments crashing onto the road and impacting vehicles. To avert the danger, concrete and steel structures were placed on the rock wall.
