Brazilian Chamber of Deputies overturns 7 Bolsonaro vetoes, restoring ban on evictions during pandemic

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The Brazilian Chamber of Deputies overturned on Monday (27) seven vetoes of President Jair Bolsonaro, including the one made by the president on the law approved by the parliamentarians that prohibit the enforcement of evictions in urban rental properties during the coronavirus pandemic emergency.

The deputies decided during a congressional session after an agreement of party leaderships that allowed the analysis of the vetoes in block, which resulted in their overthrow by 435 votes in favor, six against and two abstentions.

The vetoes have yet to be examined by the Senate, and if it agrees with the lower house, they will be effectively overturned.

The proposal that suspends the evictions determined by the courts until the end of the year was approved by both legislative houses and, subsequently, vetoed by Bolsonaro.

Through the agreement, the deputies overturned, among others, the veto to the proposal that provides for financial aid of R$3.5 billion from the federal government to regional entities to ensure internet access for students and teachers in public education networks due to the pandemic.

Also overturned was the veto imposed by Bolsonaro to the law that requires the federal government to make an advance payment of fixed contributions provided for in the concession contract of federal airport infrastructure.
