Brazilian cheeses win 5 super gold medals in world competition

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The 5th edition of the “Mondial du Fromage et des Produits Laitiers de Tours,” a world cheese competition, had Brazil as one of the main countries on the medals table. Behind only France, Brazilian cheeses won 57 medals, 5 of which were super gold, the top award.

According to the SerTãoBras institution, 183 cheeses from Minas Gerais, São Paulo, Pará, Goiás, Mato Grosso do Sul, and Paraná took part in the competition.

Traditionally known for its dairy products, the state of Minas Gerais won 40 of the 57 Brazilian medals. In total, Brazil won 11 gold, 24 silver, and 17 bronze medals.

In addition to the traditional medals, super gold cheeses are selected. The awarded Brazilian cheeses were: handmade Minas cheese, by Ivacy Pires do Santos from the Serra do Alexandre Farm, Ivair Reserva canastra cheese, produced by Ivair José de Oliveira, Santo Casamenteiro cheese, from Laticínios Cruzília, Serjão canastra cheese, from producer Sérgio de Paula Alves, and the Mandala 12 Months Handmade Pardinho cheese.

São Paulo won 15 medals for the state, with a marked female presence in the sector, of the 6 producers, 5 are women.

Organized by the Guilde Internationale des Fromagers, the event also holds product tastings, lectures, competitions such as the best cheese apprentice and the world’s best cheesemaker, and meetings between market professionals.

Brazil has had an edition of the World Cheese Cup since 2019, in partnership with the Guilde Internationale des Fromagers. The second edition, in September 2022, will be held in Inhotim, Minas Gerais.
