Brazilian banking federation reiterates support to manifesto on harmony in government

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The Brazilian Banking Federation (Febraban) on Thursday (2) reiterated its support for a manifesto calling for harmony between the three government branches, and sought to distance itself from the entity representing São Paulo’s industries (FIESP) which decided to defer the manifesto’s official release.

“Febraban considers that the content of the manifesto, approved by its own governance, was widely shared by the media in Brazil, thereby fulfilling its purpose,” the entity said in a statement, citing a manifesto that created unease with president Jair Bolsonaro’s government after it was leaked to the press and prompted state-owned Caixa Econômica Federal and Banco do Brasil to threaten to leave Febraban.

In Thursday’s statement, Febraban said it respects the two state-owned banks’ position, both of which are against signing the manifesto.

The organization representing Brazil’s largest banks added that it considers the matter closed and that it “will no longer be bound by the decisions of FIESP, which, without consulting the other entities, decided to indefinitely defer the release of the manifesto.”

FIESP, which was overseeing the production of the manifesto, on Monday decided to defer its release, alleging that other associations would also be interested in joining the initiative.
