Brazil’s e-commerce hits record with US$10.1 billion in sales in first half of 2021

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – E-commerce broke sales records in the first half of 2021 and reached R$53.4 (US$10.1) billion in revenues. The result represents a 31% increase over the same period last year.

The half-year result was driven by the 22% increase in the average sale, which reached R$534. Moreover, there was a 7% increase in the number of orders, which reached the 100 million mark.

However, the number of new consumers was only 6.2 million, down from 7.3 million in the same period last year. These newcomers have an average purchase slightly higher than the overall average: R$556.

Cell phone-placed purchases represented over half of total e-commerce revenues and number of orders. In the first semester sales through this channel reached R$28.2 billion, up 28.4%.

Department store and sporting goods segments stood out during the first half, up 37% and 48% in sales volume and 14% and 27% in the number of orders, respectively.

Pet shops, up 56% in sales and 48% in orders, and food, with 34% and 8% growth are also featured. Home and decoration goods posted an increase of 155% in sales and 67% in orders.

The Southeast region accounted for 51% of total sales, according to the survey data. However, the South and North regions grew the most during the first half, up 57% and 52%, respectively.
