New cold front approaching Brazil should lower temperatures this week

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – A new cold front began its path toward Brazil yesterday, August 11, and will lower temperatures in the Southern and Southeastern states.

Temperatures are expected to drop between 2ºC and 3ºC, mainly in the next two days, lowering both maximum and minimum temperatures. However, the cold will be much milder than in late July, when temperatures were close to or below freezing in many regions of Brazil’s Center-South.

“This time, the cold may cause frost in the South and also in the Mantiqueira Mountains, between São Paulo and Minas Gerais, but it will not be as intense as the last cold front,” explains Andrea Ramos, meteorologist at the National Institute of Meteorology (INMET).

“This cold front is mainly centered in Argentina and will move further towards the ocean. The last cold front in July also came from the polar region, but eventually penetrated further into Brazil, sharply lowering the temperatures,” she adds.

São Paulo, which recorded higher temperatures in recent days, close to 30ºC, the maximum will reach only 18ºC this Thursday and the minimum should remain at 13ºC, according to information from Climatempo.

According to INMET, in addition to the southern states, Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro and the north of Espírito Santo will experience a drop in temperature over the next few days.

After that, temperatures will rise somewhat to maintain the standard pattern for August, which is moderate and dry cold, with the forecast of new and less intense cold fronts, according to Andrea Ramos.
