RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Despite the decrease in cases and deaths from Covid-19, the virus is still circulating strongly in Brazil. However, in some cities in the countryside of São Paulo, it is possible to imagine that the end of the pandemic is approaching. In 31 municipalities, no case of coronavirus was registered last week.
The data refer to the period between July 28 and August 4. Most of the cities on the list have a small population: 22 have up to 5 000 inhabitants. The smallest is Borá, with only 838 inhabitants, where 142 cases and one death were registered during the pandemic.
The largest city in the state of São Paulo, where there were no cases last week, is Cravinhos, near Ribeirão Preto, with 35,000 inhabitants. In total, the municipality recorded 2,043 cases and 91 deaths. Locally, 26,995 vaccine doses were deployed.
Another city in the selection is Divinolândia, in the São Carlos region. The country has been free of Covid-19 for seven days.
The small town of Sarutaiá, with a population of 3,630, in the Botucatu region, has gone one week without new cases, one month after the outbreak. In June, 51 cases and 10 deaths from Covid-19 were registered at a nursing home there.
In recent weeks, the state of Sao Paulo has pushed ahead with the vaccination campaign, noting a steady decline in the number of deaths, cases, and hospitalizations. Between July 28 and August 4, no deaths from Covid-19 were recorded in 346 cities in the state. This is the best rate in the state since the pandemic began.
