RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Portugal’s Judicial Police has arrested a 23-year-old man suspected of having fired the two shots that killed Brazilian Luiz Henrique Froede, 22. According to the investigation, the two young men had been arguing for some time.

“On the day of the occurrence, the suspect was at home when he was surprised by the victim’s presence. After a heated argument, the suspect, wielding a firearm, fired two shots toward the victim that hit him in the head and chest area,” the police said in a statement sent to journalists on Wednesday, July 14.

After the shooting, the owner of the house fled the scene. According to the police he was captured the same day. The gun used was also seized.

The police note corrected the initial information about the victim’s age, stating that Froede was 22 years old. Initial reports stated that he was 24.

Also according to the police, the young man was rescued by INEM (National Institute of Medical Emergency) but did not survive the injuries sustained. He died at São José hospital in downtown Lisbon on Saturday, July 10.

Reports on what happened on the night of the murder are contradictory. A report in the Portuguese newspaper Correio da Manhã stated that the victim had been found abandoned in a street in Alfama.

A video obtained by SIC TV broadcaster and recorded by residents shows the moment when at least four people, speaking in Brazilian Portuguese, tried to help the victim, carrying Froede through the neighborhood’s streets.

In Brazilian community groups in Portugal, different accounts of the case have been spread.

Born in Teófilo Otoni, in Minas Gerais, Luiz Henrique Froede had been living in Lisbon since 2019.
