São Paulo should have New Year’s Eve and Carnaval in 2022 – Mayor

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The mayor of São Paulo, Ricardo Nunes (MDB), said Thursday, July 1, that the city should have New Year’s Eve party and Carnaval 2022. According to him, the issue will be discussed at a meeting between city departments. The authorization is already treated as feasible.

“First, we will organize and prepare the Carnaval. We have arrived, thank God, at 62% of the number of intensive care beds. Previously they were in the range of 80%, and today it is not that it is comfortable, but it makes us a little calmer in terms of UCI beds,” he said.

“Vaccination is keeping pace. We have given out 7 million doses of vaccine in the city of São Paulo, with 56% of the voting population already vaccinated. First, the city will have New Year’s Eve and then Carnaval,” Nunes said.

The parties used to gather crowds were canceled because of the pandemic, and the theme remained undefined because of the resurgence of the disease. São Paulo state has vaccinated more than 50% of the eligible population with the first dose, João Doria (PSDB) said Wednesday, but the percentage of those with the second dose is under 20%.
