Social isolation in São Paulo hits worst mark on a Sunday since early May

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – With an average of 46% on Sunday, June 27, São Paulo’s social isolation index reached its worst mark on a Sunday in seven weeks, according to São Paulo government data. The last time this had occurred was on May 9, when the state was in a transition phase.

On the other hand, ICU (Intensive Care Unit) bed occupancy rate continues to drop. On Sunday, the state registered 76.4% bed occupancy, while last week it reached 79.9% and 82.3% the week before.

Despite the decline in ICU occupancy rate, the state sees no improvement in the number of deaths and confirmed cases of Covid-19. The coronavirus pandemic indicators in São Paulo prompted Governor João Doria to once again extend the transition phase until July 15.

In all, the state has recorded some 3.7 million confirmed Covid-19 cases and 126,112 deaths from the disease. The case fatality rate remains at 3.4%.

On the other hand, traffic did not change significantly, according to data from the CET (Traffic Engineering Company). There was 6 km traffic congestion on Sunday, compared to 7 km last Sunday and the Sunday before that.

However, the number of cars on the streets increased: from 1.7 million last Sunday to 2.2 million this Sunday, some 500,000 more. Two weeks ago, there were 2.3 million.

According to SPTrans, on Friday, June 25, about 1.86 million people traveled on buses in the capital, while in the preceding week (18), there were 1.82 million. The company did not disclose the number of passengers on weekends.
