Supreme Court Justice classifies suspicions in Brazil’s Covaxin vaccine scandal as ‘serious’

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Supreme Court (STF) Justice Rosa Weber said that the negotiations for the purchase of the Covaxin vaccine were “non-transparent” and classified the evidence provided by the CPI Covid as “serious.”

That is why the Justice decided to lift the telephone and telematic secrecy of the lawyer Tulio Belchior Mano da Silveira. He represents the company Precisa Medicamentos.

Precisa is the representative in Brazil of the Indian laboratory Bharat Biotech, developer of Covaxin. The importation of the vaccine came under scrutiny by the Covid CPI after the Ministry of Economy pointed out irregularities in the contract signed with Precisa.

The judge also defended that although the person acting as a lawyer invokes certain privileges, “the lawyer is not authorized to assist his client in illegal undertakings” or “to have a conduct for practices that violate the criminal laws of the Republic.”

“Otherwise, the mere fact that someone is registered with the Brazilian Bar Association would ipso facto confer on him a general and unlimited immunity from the investigative measures of the State, which is incompatible with the republican principle,” she said.
