Brazil has once again surpassed India in the number of daily deaths by Covid-19, according to Our World in Data website, a project linked to Oxford University.

Brazil was the country registering the highest number of coronavirus victims in the world on Tuesday and Wednesday, June 8 and 9. There were 2,378 and 2,723 deaths, respectively, against 2,219 and 2,177 in India.

On Thursday, June 10, India recorded 6,148 Covid-19 victims in 24 hours, a new world record, after the state of Bihar, one of the poorest in the country, revised its death toll.

The total number of victims in Bihar nearly doubled, from 5,424 to 9,429, with data from people who died of Covid-19 at home or in private hospitals.

Brazil’s figures for today will be released later this evening.

Leading countries

India and Brazil have been alternating as the world’s most affected nations since the United States ramped up its vaccination and saw the number of cases and deaths plummet.

The U.S. registers fewer deaths and infections than Argentina and Colombia, countries with far lower populations currently experiencing the worst moment of the pandemic.

Brazil, on the other hand, saw its number of cases and deaths skyrocket in March and April, when it experienced a strong second wave and registered over 4,000 daily Covid-19 deaths.

The last time Brazil was the country registering the highest number of deaths in 24 hours was a month and a half ago, on April 24.

India, on the other hand, faced a severe second wave between April and May, when the country posted world records for new infections and victims in 24 hours.

In both countries, the upsurge of the pandemic was driven by new variants: the P.1 (Gamma) in the case of Brazil, and the B.1.617 (Delta) in the case of India.
