Rio de Janeiro: pregnant woman killed during shootout between police and drug dealers

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL -A shootout between state police and drug dealers in the Complexo do Lins resulted in the death of Kathlen de Oliveira Romeu, on Tuesday afternoon, June 8. She was pregnant, was rushed to a hospital but succumbed to a gunshot wound – the police have not said who fired the fatal bullet.

According to the State Police (MP), officers from the Lins Police Pacification Unit (UPP) were attacked by gunfire from criminals in the area known as Beco da 14, causing a clash, resulting in the seizure of a rifle magazine, 9mm ammunition and drugs.

“After the shooting stopped, the officers found a wounded woman and rushed her to the Salgado Filho Municipal Hospital, in Méier, where – unfortunately – she died. The crime scene was preserved and the forensics team was called,” said the State Police in a statement.

The Capital’s Homicide Police Department is investigating the case. Concurrently with the Civil Police investigations, the Police Pacification Coordinator (CPP) will open an investigation procedure to determine the circumstances of the incident.

After the occurrence, local residents obstructed the Grajaú-Jacarepaguá highway and set fire to objects. The road, which connects Tijuca Jacarepaguá to Barra da Tijuca, was cleared by early evening.
