President Jair Bolsonaro delivered a speech at the opening of the Brazil 2021 Investment Forum on Monday, May 31. In his opening speech, alongside Economy Minister Paulo Guedes, Bolsonaro emphasized the role of reforms to reduce the “Brazil cost” and improve the country’s business environment.

“My government is committed to reforms and structuring projects to reduce the ‘Brazil cost’. It involves improving norms and policies to enhance the business environment. To this end, we have designed tax solutions that ensure macroeconomic stability in a context of budgetary challenges. We have involved the private sector, domestic and foreign, in the solution of our well-known logistical and infrastructure bottlenecks,” said Bolsonaro.

The president further stated that the country intends to become a member of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). “We want successful public policies, internationally recognized and based on empirical evidence, in addition to modernizing, simplifying, and rendering our legislation more transparent. This is why, among other reasons, we want to become an OECD member.”

Bolsonaro also said that Brazil aims to bolster the World Trade Organization (WTO) through a “multilateral trading system without protectionism, grounded in rules.”

“We wish to increase economic interaction with our region, which entails a more dynamic, free and democratic MERCOSUR and South America.”

Pandemic

The president addressed investors about the pandemic situation in Brazil. According to him, the crisis caused by Covid-19 “raises concerns, but does not have the power to compromise the long term of one of the world’s largest economies.”

Chief of Staff Minister Luiz Eduardo Ramos was also at Bolsonaro’s side during the event. Before the president’s speech, Foreign Minister Carlos França also addressed investors.
