Brazil’s Bolsonaro says chaos and panic are promoted by those who want to return to power

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – President Jair Bolsonaro on Thursday, May 27, again criticized the movement-restriction measures imposed by governors and mayors to contain the spread of Covid-19, and said that “chaos and panic” are being created by those who want to regain power.

“We know there is not much to celebrate, but truth about what has been and is being done in practice must be restored, so that the panic and chaos promoted by those who wish to retake power and their nefarious practices do not triumph,” Bolsonaro wrote on Twitter, as he celebrated the creation of jobs this year in Brazil, despite the pandemic.

The president reiterated an economic team mantra, that Brazil was among the countries with the lowest drop in economic activity in 2020, as it shrank only 4.4%, when projections pointed to a Gross Domestic Product slump of up to 10%.

“There have always been two challenges: the virus and the economy. And although the media and the left-wing have denied this and other facts, adopting a pseudoscientific discourse to disguise the virus’ demagogic politicization, we prioritize both issues. After all, there is no health in being destitute,” Bolsonaro wrote.

The president again said that Brazil is one of the countries that vaccinates the most in the world and should soon reach 100 million distributed doses. Bolsonaro uses the gross number of vaccines, which would place the country in third place in the vaccination ranking.

However, in the proportion of vaccinated population, the country drops to 12th when the rate of people who have been administered at least one vaccine dose is considered, at 20.09% of the population, according to Our World in Data website.
