Brazil’s infrastructure will receive US$49 billion in investments by 2022 – Minister

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – During a presentation on Wednesday, May 25, at the 22nd CEO Conference Brazil, an event promoted by BTG Pactual bank, Infrastructure Minister Tarcísio de Freitas said that total private investments contracted in infrastructure by next year should reach R$260 (US$49) billion.

“In the second half of this year we will hold the largest port auction of the Port of Santos and the first port privatization, in Vitória, Espírito Santo,” he said. “Next, we will have the new concession of the Presidente Dutra Highway [between Rio and São Paulo] and we are closing the structuring of R$42 billion in highway concessions in Paraná.”

The Minister also stressed the importance of the contracts’ new economic modelling. “Private enterprise has perceived convenience in the projects that we structured. We currently have a very clear risk matrix, which is crucial,” he said.

A good example of the efficacy of the new rules is the cash protection measure for airports, according to Tarcísio. “We did the first economic-financial balances with a long-term perspective and debt reprofiling. The promptness with which the granting authority acted was a success factor for these airport auctions,” he emphasized.

The Minister’s panel, “Infrastructure: The Sector of the Future in Brazil?,” also included the presence of CEOs Luís Henrique Guimarães from COSAN and Henrique Martins, from Brookfield.

The CEO Conference Brazil also welcomed Economy Minister Paulo Guedes, Central Bank President Roberto Campos Neto, and the presidents of the Senate, Rodrigo Pacheco, and of the Chamber of Deputies, Arthur Lira, over the two-day event. Late Wednesday afternoon, André Esteves, senior partner at BTG Pactual, closed the event with the topic “Brazilian Economic Scenario: Challenges & Opportunities.”

The CEO Conference Brasil 2021 began on Tuesday, May 25. The panels include discussions with some of the most prominent names in the country and the world in areas such as economics, market and financial sector, technology, health, agribusiness and career.
