In 4 months, Brazil has only partially vaccinated 20% of its population

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – By Monday, Brazil had vaccinated 42.3 million people with at least one dose. This means that a little over 4 months after the start of the immunization campaign against Covid-19, 20.1% of the population is partially immunized.

Of this total, 20.8 million, or 9.9% of Brazilians, are now fully immunized after being administered two doses of a Covid-19 vaccine. All immunizers currently in use in Brazil – Pfizer-BioNTech, Oxford-AstraZeneca, and CoronaVac – require two doses.

Although the rate achieved is important, it signals that the pace of Covid-19 vaccination is still low in the country. In absolute numbers, Brazil ranks 5th among the countries and regions vaccinating the most, according to Bloomberg data.

However, the situation is very different in relative figures. The country ranks 73rd in the proportion of its people partially vaccinated – administered at least one dose.

Currently, an average of 710,778 doses are administered per day. The rate is 28.9% below the country’s capacity to administer at least 1 million doses a day. The challenge to consistently reach and exceed this goal is mainly associated with the low number of doses available to Brazilians, at least when compared to the size of the population.

The expectation is that the pace will increase in the coming months, with the availability of a larger amount of doses.

By comparison, Israel took only one month to vaccinate 20% of its population, according to data compiled by Our World in Data platform, linked to Oxford University, in the United Kingdom. The UK took 38 days. Chile, the best performing country in South America, took just over 2 months, and the United States took about 3 months.
