Brazil averages fewer than 2,000 daily deaths for first time in 55 days

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – On Monday, May 10, Brazil registered 2,275 deaths by Covid-19 in the past 24 hours, totaling 425,711 fatalities since the start of the pandemic. This brings the rolling average of deaths over the past 7 days to 1,980, below the 2,000 mark for the first time in 55 days.

Compared to the average of 14 days ago, there was a -17% variation, pointing to a downward trend in deaths from the virus.

The figures are included in the new survey by the media outlet consortium on the situation of the coronavirus pandemic in Brazil, consolidated at 8 PM. The balance is based on data from the state health secretariats.

The last time the weekly average number of deaths fell below the 2,000 mark was on March 16. Since then, the indicator that always takes into account the last week reached a peak of 3,125 of average on April 12, and has since been dropping at a pace that has varied between stability and decline.

No state shows an upward trend in deaths, while 19 states and the Federal District show a downward trend.

In confirmed cases, since the start of the pandemic 15,285,048 Brazilians have had or have the novel coronavirus, with 71,018 of those confirmed in the past day. The rolling average over the past 7 days stood at 60,605 new daily diagnoses. This represents a +6% variation from the cases recorded in two weeks, pointing to a trend toward stability in diagnoses too.
