Brazil records less than 900 deaths per day for first time in two months (May 10)

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Brazil, one of the countries hardest hit by the covid epidemic in the world, recorded 889 deaths from the disease in the last 24 hours, bringing the daily number of deaths below 900 for the first time in just over two months, the government reported on Monday.

The country had not registered less than 900 deaths per day since March 1, when 778 deaths were recorded. Before the second wave of Covid-19, more virulent and lethal than the first, significantly increased the country’s number of deaths and cases.

Although the number of daily deaths has been falling slowly and gradually since the record 4,249 deaths on April 8, the Ministry of Health itself admits that the figures released on Sundays and Mondays are generally lower than on other days due to fewer officials processing the data on weekends.

The numbers of deaths and covid cases usually increase on Tuesdays, when data not counted on the previous two days are updated.

According to the bulletin released on Monday by the Ministry of Health, the 889 deaths registered in the last 24 hours bring to 423,229 the cumulative number of deaths due to coronavirus in Brazil since the beginning of the pandemic, almost 15 months ago.

The Health Ministry also reported that Brazil registered 25,200 new cases of the disease in the last 24 hours, the lowest number since last Monday (24,619 infections), bringing the total number of infections to 15.2 million.

Despite the sharp increase in deaths in March and April, when the country began to experience a second wave of the most virulent and deadly pandemic, the numbers are beginning to fall gradually and slowly, according to averages released by the Ministry.

According to official statistics, the average number of deaths by covid in Brazil in the last 7 days fell this Monday to 2,087 per day, the lowest average in almost two months, since the 2,017 per day recorded on March 17, and much lower than the record recorded on April 1 (3,117 deaths per day).

The average number of cases in the last 7 days stood at 61,494 per day, above that recorded exactly one week ago (58,587 daily infections), but well below the record recorded on March 29 (77,129 daily infections).

According to the Ministry’s bulletin, of the 15.2 million Brazilians who have contracted coronavirus, 13.8 million have already recovered and been discharged, corresponding to 90.5% of the total. Another 1.03 million are still under medical care (6.8%).

These figures indicate that Covid-19 has a mortality rate in Brazil of 201.4 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants, an incidence of 7,237.8 infections per 100,000 inhabitants, and a case fatality rate of 2.8% of those infected.

The state of Sao Paulo, the most populous with 46 million inhabitants, surpassed this Monday the mark of 3 million infected (3,006,250), after having reached last Friday the mark of 100,000 deaths (100,854).
