Rio authorizes beach permanence and ends curfew

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The city of Rio de Janeiro has authorized people and businesses to remain on the city’s beaches on all days, including weekends and public holidays.

The curfew on the streets from 11 PM to 5 AM has also been lifted. The new measures will be in force until May 20th.

The restrictive measures had been in place since March, in order to contain the Covid-19 pandemic, but expired with the publication of a new decree on May 7th, by Rio de Janeiro’s City Hall.

The new decree also ends the restriction on opening hours for in-person attendance in trade and services, including bars and restaurants.

In the case of bars and restaurants, the only time restriction determined by the city hall is for live music performances, which may only take place until 11 PM.

In the case of establishments located in shopping malls, there are restrictions on the number of people to be attended simultaneously.

Closed venues may only cater to 40% of their capacity. In open spaces, the limit rises to 60%. The same rules apply to concert halls and artistic performances in event venues.

However, nightclubs, dance clubs, and dance halls are still banned; the holding of samba circles and parties that require a temporary permit, in public and private areas; as well as the access of buses and other charter vehicles into the city, except those providing regular services for companies.
