Mourão says Bolsonaro will choose someone else for vice-president in 2022

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Brazil’s vice-president mentioned the possibility of running for a Senate seat in Rio Grande do Sul next year.

On Monday, April 26th, vice-president Hamilton Mourão (PRTB) said that president Jair Bolsonaro should choose another name to compose the re-election slate in 2022.

In two years of government, the general and the retired Army captain have differed in some points, which, according to sources, has displeased the head of the Executive.

With the return of ex-president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva to the political arena, Bolsonaro is looking for a strong name to be reelected in next year’s election.

“Bolsonaro will choose someone else to accompany him for reelection. What I have seen [in] Bolsonaro’s statements is that he would need another person in my place, but he never said that to me,” said Mourão during an interview to Valor Econômico newspaper.

According to the vice-president, he intends to run for a seat in the Federal Senate for Rio Grande do Sul next year.

“If the possibility opens up, I see that running for the Senate seat would be more in line with the way I am, the way I act.”

Mourão said that if the candidacy in fact materializes, it should be done by PRTB. However, he said that he will wait to see if the party will undergo restructuring, especially after the death last week of its founder, Levy Fidelix.

Third way

During the interview, the vice-president also considered that, so far, there is no name with national strength to dispute the 2022 election as a “third way.”

Currently, the political scenario has at least five candidates, besides Bolsonaro and ex-president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Ciro Gomes (PDT), Eduardo Leite (PSDB), Fernando Haddad (PT), João Doria (PSDB) and Luciano Huck (no party).

“The third way, to emerge, has to rely on the union of the center, center-right, center-left parties,” declared Mourão, stating that these parties need to leave their “vanity” behind and seek a “feasible name that will excite the electorate.”
