“Only God can remove me from the presidential chair,” says Bolsonaro

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – “I really think that something wrong or very wrong has been happening for a long time in Brazil, let’s see if the information is processed and let’s see what Arthur Lira is going to do about this, if they will start a proceeding or not,” Bolsonaro said in his weekly live broadcast on social networks.

“I don’t want to anticipate, to discuss what I think about this. I’ll only say one thing, only God can remove me from the presidential chair, and he will remove me, obviously, by taking my life. Other than this, what we can see happening in Brazil will not come true, it really won’t,” he added.

Cármen Lúcia’s decision with respect to Lira – who has five days to respond – stems from a lawsuit lodged by an attorney demanding the Chamber president to analyze Bolsonaro’s impeachment requests. The STF justice issued a merely formal decision, with no review of the substance of the case.

There are over a hundred requests for impeachment for Lira’s evaluation, but, according to the Constitution, there is no deadline for any deliberation. Lira is an ally of Bolsonaro, having been elected to office with the support of the government.

Cancer

The president further stated during his live broadcast that he knows where lies the “cancer” that needs to be overcome in Brazil to win what he called a war, and again said that the federal government will act, within the boundaries of the Constitution, to reestablish order in the country.

Bolsonaro’s threatening remarks – who failed to specify to whom he was referring – come at a time when the president is escalating his rhetoric amid criticism of the federal administration’s handling of the Covid-19 pandemic and his popularity plummeting, as well as recent STF rulings that have displeased him.

“If people are well-informed, if they are aware of what is going on, we will win this war. Some want me to be immediate. I know what needs to be done within the four lines of the Constitution, if the people become more informed, if they inform themselves, if they nudge their neighbors, if they start to show them where the future of our Brazil lies, we will win this war,” he said.

“I know where Brazil’s cancer lies. We have a way to win this war. If this cancer is cured, the body will return to normal,” he said.

According to Bolsonaro, the federal government will act within the “four lines” of the Constitution to restore order to Brazil. He said it is the population that dictates the direction of the country.
