Instagram Lite: App’s lighter version reaches Brazil

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Instagram Lite, a lighter version of Instagram for Android, reaches Brazil on Wednesday, April 14. Taking up only 2 MB on a phone, the app targets users with limited storage space, Internet connection or data packages.

Much-anticipated among Brazilians, the app has been available in over 170 countries since March, and can now be downloaded in the country in Google Play Store.

There are no plans to launch a version for iPhone (iOS).

According to Instagram, the Lite version offers “the same Instagram,” but with a better download experience, less storage consumption, and lower mobile data usage. The social media’s goal is to provide access for users around the world, “irrespective of the device, platform and network they are connected to.” Some of the main app’s features are not yet available, such as live streams and the creation of Reels.

Instagram Lite targets emerging markets such as Brazil, India, Indonesia, and Turkey.

With the launch, the social network seeks to reach people with cell phones that have storage issues, who often uninstall some apps to enable installing others; users with slow Internet connections; and who have limited or very expensive data packages.

The network stated that 1 in 4 users in South America still depended on 2G networks in 2020.
